Ivan Vidal received the Telecommunication Engineering degree in 2001 from the University of Vigo, and the Ph.D. in Telematics Engineering in 2008 from the University Carlos III of Madrid. Since 2002, he has worked in Universidad Carlos III Madrid, occupying the positions of Teaching Assistant (2002-2008) and Visiting Professor (2008-2022). He is currently working as Associate Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. He has held the position of Secretary of the Department of Telematics Engineering in the periods 18/07/2015-14/07/2017 and 17/07/2019-26/07/2021
Regarding his scientific and technological activity, he has published more than 70 scientific works, mainly in the fields of Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and 5G networks, unmanned aerial systems, network security, ICN, and multimedia networking.
His research activity has been funded mainly through participation in research projects. Dr. Vidal has worked as a member of the research team in 16 research projects, 10 of them from the European Union, 4 from the Spanish National Plan, and 2 funded by the Autonomous Community of Madrid. Some of the European research projects in which he has participated are: H2020 FISHY, where he is currently working as principal investigator (PI), H2020 5GZORRO, H2020 LABYRINTH, H2020 5GRANGE, and H2020 5GINFIRE (PI). He also works as PI in the national project TRUE5G, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology.
With the aim of collaborating with other research groups, he has done 5 postdoctoral stays in international and national R&D centers. In particular, in 2011 he did a 5-month stay at the Instituto de Telecomunicações, at its center in Aveiro (Portugal). From August 2019 to December 2020, he did a research stay at Telefónica I+D in Madrid (Spain).
