INTRODUCTION

PREAMBULO (TIC2000-0268-P4-C03-01) stands for "Prototype of high performance multiservice network, based on IPv4/IPv6 over wavelength division multiplexing" (in Spanish).

The project is supported by the Spanish Department of Science and Technology, through its I+D+I National Schedule 2000-2003 (Scientific Research + Development + Technology innovation). One of the main purposes of this national schedule was to promote the Spanish science-technology-enterprise system, and PREAMBULO is in fact towards this objective being considered in the category P4 (MCyT-P4: projects in cooperation with enterprises).

PREAMBULO is based on the forecast that a massive deployment of WDM transmission infrastructure is going to take place. This infrastructure, in addition to supporting the current services, will also offer an efficient support in cost and performance to an emerging service market dominated by IP technology.

In this context, the project has as its overall objective to propose engineering solutions that allow a smooth transition from a classical network infrastructure based on SDH rings (typically supporting ATM) to an IP/WDM infrastructure, very innovative under different aspects: technical, economical and in its service provision and business structure. Primary study issues will be the management functions of the optical network: traffic control, failure recovery and QoS. Advanced experiences will also be carried out to analyse the system behaviour under multicast and IPv6 traffic.

A main project result will be the availability of a high performance network that will connect the requesting institutions to form one of the broadband islands connected to RedIris-2. For this reason, the workplan includes as a relevant aspect specific tasks oriented to study the interworking with RedIris-2, and other advanced international networks as TEN-155 and Internet2, as well as with other islands based on advanced technologies: UMTS, CATV, LMDS and satellite networks.

OBJECTIVES

The project is proposing the following main concrete objectives:

Once the physical infrastructure is properly installed and configured, different experiences are proposed:

DESCRIPTION

At the physical level, the network is made of three different nodes with the convenient optical equipment located in the corresponding partner sites (all of them in Madrid), with direct optical fibre connections between them (TID is centralising these links).

In order to build a fully connected network, different wavelengths have been enabled for each end-to-end connections:
