Chapter 13.  The work environment in Linux

It is assumed that you have the virtual machine executing while reading this document. We recommend you to try all the applications and commands that are described because it is the best way to gain proficiency. Reading the document without executing the machine is significantly less effective.

13.1.  The Desktop

The initial screen in the computer is the Desktop because simulates a desktop where we just sat. The area at the bottom of the screen is known as the panel and contains several icons that are used to show information and to start some applications.

The appearance of the desktop can be configurable in most of its aspects. The panel can be in any of the screen edges, it may hide when not in use, the desktop background can be changed, you may add applications that are attached to the desktops and are called widgets, etc. In Linux there are several graphical environments. The one we will use is KDE, one of the most popular together with GNOME. The following figure shows the desktop in the virtual machine.

The text in each window can be selected with either the mouse or the keyboard. Given a selected text in a window, depending on the application it can be:

  • Copy it

  • Cut (copy and delete it)

  • Paste it (in the same window or a different one

Each program has different keyboard combinations to perform these three operations. Copy and paste is an operation that we will be doing in our session and will make our work more efficient, because it allows us to save time and typing mistakes. We will try it later with the text editor.
